Joy’s Favorite Russian River Valley Restaurants

One of the most frequent FAQ in our tasting room is: “Where should we go for lunch?” It makes me smile because we are always genuinely happy to share what we’re enjoying in the area. Hospitality, after all, doesn’t end when we pour the last splash. It extends into making recommendations for Russian River Valley restaurants and supporting local favorites we share.
Our Favorite Russian River Valley Restaurants
Sushi Kosho & Salt & Sea (Sebastopol, The Barlow)
- Sleek, modern sushi with pristine ingredients
- Sister poke shop Salt & Sea offers Hawaiian bowls + Japanese egg salad sandwiches
- Great for takeout picnics at Iron Horse
Bubbles and sushi are a personal staple, and Sushi Kosho is delicious. Sleek, modern, and artful, Sushi Kosho brings the best of Japanese precision to Sebastopol’s Barlow marketplace, which already makes it very fun. Pristine, inventive, top quality, it’s a spot that feels both indulgent and refreshing — perfect after a morning of sparkling.
Chef/owner Jake Rand of Sushi Kosho has also opened a fabulous fast-casual poke shop, also in The Barlow, called Salt & Sea. The menu features Hawaiian-style poke bowls with warm seasoned rice, raw fish marinated in soy sauce and sesame oil, seaweed, avocado, and Maui onions — perfect for takeout.
Don’t miss Salt & Sea’s grab-and-go case with Japanese egg salad sandwiches: simple, comforting, and unexpectedly luxurious. Both options make for a delicious picnic with bubbles at Iron Horse — enjoyed at our redwood picnic tables with a ringside view of the vineyards and full bottle service.
Hog Island Oyster Co. (Tomales Bay)
- Iconic Northern California oyster experience with bay views
- Known for raw + barbecued oysters; long-time Iron Horse partner for “Oyster Sundays”
- Scenic drive through Sonoma landscapes makes it part of the adventure
There’s nothing quite like slurping oysters while looking out over the very waters where they are farmed. At Hog Island, the briny, sea-sweet flavors are as pure as it gets. This is a quintessential Northern California experience. Technically Hog island is in Marin County, but the drive is fabulous. Go through Occidental and take Joy Road (of course), ideally driving a stick shift, through five topographies – an almost cinematic progression from rolling vineyard hills, through redwood groves, open pastures dotted with barns, cows, and old farmsteads, all the way to rugged bluffs. This drive captures the essence of Sonoma County’s westward sweep.
We have been friends with Hog Island since their inception. My mother celebrated her 65th birthday there. One of my favorite memories was looking out at the water’s edge after an amazing feast.
These days, Hog Island comes to us quarterly for our celebrated Oyster Sundays. We’d love for you to join us for our next one. Expect oysters freshly shucked – both raw and barbecued to perfection, paired with the debut of our new vintage of Gratitude, benefiting the Redwood Empire Food Bank.
November is when oysters shine at their best — briny, firm, kissed by the sea — and the pairing with bubbles is pure magic. Come raise a glass with us to a season of abundance and beauty.

Nightingale Breads, pizza from Sonoma Pizza Co. and everything at Underwood Bar & Bistro never disappoint.
Sonoma Pizza Co. (Forestville)
- Family-friendly wood-fired pizza with organic, 72-hour fermented crust
- Locally sourced toppings, salads, meatballs, and house-made desserts
- Beloved by locals; annual Iron Horse holiday party tradition
Sonoma Pizza Co. has become its own draw. Family-friendly and unfussy, it delivers serious craft alongside comfort. The crust alone — 100% organic, naturally leavened, cold-fermented for 72 hours — is worth the trip. Pizzas fire in the wood oven in about 90 seconds, emerging with that perfect leopard spotting. Locally sourced toppings, delicious, bright salads, SPC meatballs, roasted romano beans, and house-made desserts round out a menu that’s both thoughtful and crave-worthy.
We host our annual holiday party here, and no one ever wants to change the tradition. It’s that good. You can see how much fun we had in this recap post.
Nightingale Breads
Tiny Forestville is becoming a destination. There’s Nightingale Breads for the heavenly cheesecakes – a different flavor every week – New York style, Basque, lemon curd, chocolate. Their “Forestville Baguette”, which I joyfully stand in line for. The Thursday and Saturday sandwiches – ham and cheese or brie and jam – that disappear almost as soon as they’re set out. And don’t miss the soft, rich, buttery addicting babka by the slice, with beautiful swirls of cinnamon running through the loaf.
Underwood Bar & Bistro (Graton)
- Classic local hangout with bistro fare
- Joy’s go-to orders: tuna tartare for lunch, oysters and cheeseburger rare for dinner
- Walkable/bikeable from nearby trails; relaxed “Cheers”-like atmosphere
One mile to our east is Underwood Bar & Bistro. There’s a bicycle/walking trail from Ross Station Road to the old Graton Fire Department that’s about a 20-minute bike ride. This is where the locals hang out. It’s our Cheers!
Being a creature of habit, I invariably order the same thing: tuna tartar for lunch and for dinner – oysters and a cheeseburger rare, cheddar cheese, salad instead of fries.

Incredible view from River’s End and menu selections from Boon Eat & Drink.
Boon Eat + Drink (Guerneville)
- Chef Crista Luedtke’s seasonal California cuisine
- Known for roasted cauliflower with spicy vinaigrette
- One of Wine Country’s Top 25 Restaurants (SF Chronicle)
Guerneville is one of those places that feels like a discovery — a riverside town tucked beneath the redwoods, with just the right mix of woodsy charm and creative energy. It has become a true destination, and much of that is thanks to chef and entrepreneur Crista Luedtke.
Crista is a visionary, with a hotel and several eateries to her name, but Boon Eat + Drink, which she opened in 2008, remains her most personal. The menu is fresh and seasonal, known for dishes like roasted cauliflower with spicy vinaigrette, alongside heartier mains. It’s no surprise the San Francisco Chronicle named it one of Wine Country’s Top 25 Restaurants.
A Food Network favorite — with wins on Guy’s Grocery Games and a turn on Wildcard Kitchen — Crista still channels her heart into Guerneville. Dining at Boon is a taste not only of her cooking, but of the community she has helped shape.
River’s End (Jenner)
- Ocean-view dining where the Russian River meets the Pacific
- Celebrated as one of the Top 5 Most Romantic Restaurants in the U.S.
- Menu features local seafood, lamb, and artisan cheeses
Continue west from Guerneville and the redwoods give way to open sky, where the Russian River meets the Pacific in a spectacular finale. Perched above it all is River’s End, a restaurant that feels like the ultimate reward for making the drive. Through the dining room’s picture windows, you watch the tide roll in and the light shift over Goat Rock — a view so captivating it nearly upstages the meal.
Named one of the Top 5 Most Romantic Restaurants in the U.S., River’s End is a place to celebrate life’s milestones or simply the wonder of the Sonoma Coast. The menu is as local as it gets: king salmon and Dungeness crab fresh off the boats, Valley Ford lamb, Petaluma poultry, artisan cheeses. Pair it with bubbles and that view, and you’ll understand why guests leave already dreaming of their return.
River’s End also makes a wonderful round trip from Iron Horse — one way along the coast, the other following the Russian River through the redwoods. It’s the perfect loop, capturing the full Sonoma story in a single day.
At Iron Horse, we like to think of our tastings as the centerpiece of your Sonoma story. Lunch at one of these favorites is the after party, whether sushi, oysters, wood-fired pizza or a romantic coastal view — it’s an extension of the Sonoma experience.
And if you ever find yourself wondering where to go, don’t hesitate to ask. We’re always happy to connect you with our friends.
